"Aspen, honey, theres someone at the door for you"
You crack an eye open and see your grandmother standing in your doorway, she looks behind her and says something to the other room, then looks back to you and gestures you to get up.
[[get dressed|dress]] - [[go back to sleep|sleep]]
You sigh and roll out of bed, stretching for a moment, before you throw on some quick clothes so you are presentable, and shuffle out of the room. At the door, waiting for you, is a canine in particularly nice clothes, standing as straight as a board, arms crossed behind their back.
"Aspen?"
"Yes?"
"You have been summoned to escort an enchantress to the capital. The queen requests her presence."
You blink, "An... uh... enchantress?"
"Yes."
"Can't she just... teleport there? If shes magic?"
"No."
[[agree]] - [[decline]]You decide its too early, nobody has ever had anything important enough that you should get up at dawn for it, so it can wait. You pull your pillow over your head and fall back asleep
....
But your pillow is cruelly snatched from your head, your grandmother lightly swats your head, "Up, up! They say its important, Aspen, quickly!"
[[fine, fine|dress]]PROFILES
more people will show up here as you meet them!
Aspen
[image]
they/them - 20 - timber wolf
This is you!
Gramma
[image]
she/her - 71 - timber wolf
Your grandmother, you have lived with her and your grandfather after your parents passed away as a child. Now you take care of them when they need it and help put food on the table, so they let you stay, even as an adult.
Grandad
[image]
he/him - 74 - timber wolf
Your grandfather, he lives here too, he can be a little tough on you but you know he loves you a lot. After he hurt his back he had to retire as a carpenter, but he still does woodcarving at home and sells trinkets to help support you all monetarily.
<<if $nina is "true">>Nina
[image]
she/her - 11 - fox
The 'enchantress' you are escorting to the capital. She's a little shy, and doesn't seem to be happy to be going there.<</if>>
Queen Helena
[image]
she/her - 38 - lion
The only surviving royalty in your country, you don't know her to be cruel, but she's not the kindest either. She does what she has to to protect her people. You've never met her in person."Well... okay then. Right now?"
The messenger looks you up and down, "...You have time to finish dressing. I will be waiting outside when you are ready."
You nod and wander back to your bedroom. You finish getting dressed, flatten out your bedhead, and head back out into the other room. You should probably tell your grandparents you won't be back for a while, the trip to the capital is at least a week if you don't dilly-dally, and thats just one way.
[[say goodbye|bye]] - [[just go|leave]]"I don't know if I have the time for that... The capital is pretty far, why does it have to be me?"
"You were summoned. I was not made aware of the reason. If you do not comply, another escort will be chosen at random. They will recieve the pay instead."
You squint, "The pay?"
"Yes."
"How much?"
"Enough to comfortably support your household for three months."
Out of the corner of your eye you see your grandmother's ears perk up. Your family isn't necessarily scraping by, but it would be nice to have that wiggle room...
[[okay, fine|agree]] - [[still no|ending 1]]You walk over to your grandparents, they've sat down now and invited the messenger inside while they waited, everybody is looking at you expectantly.
"Well... It'll probably be at least two weeks until I'm back. Maybe a little longer."
Your grandmother looks a little teary eyed, but nods, your grandfather pats her shoulder, "Now, now, thats not so long, they'll be back before you even know it."
You nod confidently, "Yeah, you won't even notice I've gone, promise."
"Yes, of course." she wipes her eyes, "We will miss you, dear. I love you."
"Love you too, Gramma. And you, Grandad."
"Love ya."
With that, you follow the messenger out the door, waving goodbye before it closes.
[[follow]]As you walk back out, you see your grandparents have sat down now and invited the messenger inside while they waited, everybody is looking at you expectantly.
Goodbyes always make you a little sad, and the trip can't possibly be too long, so you just wave to your grandparents as the messenger heads towards the door. They look a little sad too, but you'll be back home soon.
So, you follow the messenger out the door and start on your way.
[[follow]]Ehh... While the pay would be nice, that is a lot of committment, and a long trip with some lady you don't even know. Its not like you'll be punished for not going, so you'd rather stay here.
"I think I'm going to have to decline. I have responsibilities here and whatnot."
"I see."
You nod, the messenger doesn't emote, and simply turns around and walks away from your home.
When you turn back to see your grandparents, your grandmother is visibly a little disappointed, but smiles at you, "Well, now we won't have to miss you if you go, I'm sure they'll find someone who is just as responsible for the job."
ENDING 1You follow the messenger as they walk, leading you down the road further into town.
"So is she...here?"
"I am guiding you to her home."
"Yeah, but like, does she live here? In Redwood Pass?"
"Yes."
"Oh."
They don't seem much for conversation, so you keep walking and run through all the people in town you think could be a secret enchantress. Maybe the librarian has a bunch of spellbooks hidden away in her bookcases, or its that one weird lady who climbs trees and then gets stuck in them and has to yell for somebody to get a ladder every time. Who knows.
[[follow|follow2]]<<set $nina to "true">>You keep walking, you pass by the library and turn a corner, some people notice the very clearly royal messenger that you're following and look quizzically, but you don't say anything. You know barely any more than they do.
Eventually, however, they stop. A quaint little house on the opposite side of town to you, you wonder if they've kept the spellcasting a secret, or if you just haven't heard because you don't know these people as well as your neighbors. The messenger knocks on the door.
"Just a moment!"
You both stand outside for a minute before the door opens, a fox in her 30s to 40s smiles at you both, is this the enchantress?
"Nina, your escort is here!"
Nina, that must be her.
You put on a stoic, professional look, mimicing the posture of the messenger as you wait, footsteps pad from out of view into the doorway, and...
The enchantress... is a child. Not even in her teens, she's dressed in an elaborate gown, her hair done up in ribbons, and she does not look pleased to be going to the capital.
[[greet her|greet]] - [[say nothing|nothing]]<<set $affection to $affection + 5>>
"...Hello."
She eyes you wearily, then looks down at the floor.
"I'm Aspen. I'm taking you to the capital."
Her mother rubs her shoulder, which wills her to respond. Her voice is small, nervous, and it really rubs in the fact that shes just a child, "I'm Nina."
"Are you ready to go?"
She shuffles her feet, not answering for a moment. She's probably not ready because she doesn't want to go at all. Her mother pets her head, avoiding the probably time consuming hairstyle, attempting to soothe her nerves, "Oh honey, you'll be back home before you know it." she picks up a little knapsack and helps Nina put it on, then kneels in front of her, "Just think of it like a road trip, a vacation. You'll have lots of fun on the way there, I promise."
Nina avoids her gaze, but nods quietly.
[[hold out your hand|handhold]] - [[don't|nohandhold]]<<set $affection to $affection - 3>>You don't want to come across as some weird stranger trying to befriend her, so you don't say anything. Keeping it strictly professional.

[[hold out your hand|handhold]] - [[don't|nohandhold]]about the game
this is a game about your actions and the affect they have on other people and relationships to them. you are not told when your actions affect the story, like you often are not in real life. <<set $affection to $affection + 5>><<set $handhold to "true">>You cautiously hold out a hand to her, she glances up at you and makes eye contact for second, then apprehensively takes your hand. You smile at her, she purposefully looks away. You're sure she's just shy, so you don't take any offense. It must be intimidating to be around all of these strange new people, she's bound to be a little nervous
You guide her out of the house, say goodbye to her mother, and the messenger splits off from you as well, having some other business to attend to in town. Now its just you, and Nina.
[[strike up a conversation|talk]] - [[say nothing|quiet]]You straighten up a bit and take a step back, giving her room to follow, her ears droop a bit as she follows you, she clearly still doesn't want to leave, but she's not putting up a fight at all.

<<print $affection>><<if $handhold is "true">>You walk quietly, hand in hand, heading north towards the edge of town, to the road thats the first leg of your trip to the capital. [[keep walking|walk]]<<set $affection to $affection + 3>>"So..." Nina's ears perk up a bit, but she doesn't look at you, "...Are you excited for all the new places we're going to go?"
She considers for a moment, "...I've been this way before." she finally says, "My aunt lives a few villages ahead."
"Oh, well, at least you get to visit her again."
Her ears droop a bit, "Uh-huh."
"Well, if theres anywhere you want to stop, if you want to do something fun, just say so, okay?"
"Okay."
You hesitate, "...And let me know if your feet start to hurt. Its a pretty long trip, so we can stop at any time, or I can carry you for a while too."
She nods
[[talk about something else|talk]] - [[leave her alone|walk]]<<set $affection to $affection - 3>>You won't lie, you are incredibly curious about how powerful this little girl must be if the queen is requesting her presence.

"I guess." she says, voice small and quiet.
"What kind of magic do you do?"
She doesn't answer for a moment, staring down at the ground as you walk, "...Offensive magic."
'Offensive' seems like kind of a specific word that you feel like a kid wouldn't use, so it must be how the adults around her describe it. Its fighting magic, magic that hurts people.
[[pry a bit more|pry]] - [[leave her alone|walk]] - [[talk about something else|talk]]<<if $affection lte 40>>"What do you normally do with your friends?"
Nina doesn't look at you, considering a moment before mumbling something like, "Normal stuff."
You try again to urge her to open up a bit, "So... do you guys play together and stuff? Do you play any fun games?"
"No."
Well, okay. She doesn't seem like she feels like talking.<<else>><<set $affection to $affection + 5>>"What do you normally do with your friends?"
Nina doesn't look at you, considering a moment before she says quietly, "I don't have any." her voice gets a little bit shakey, but you can tell shes trying very hard not to let it be noticable, "I um... I don't have time for it. I need to work very hard for the queen."
Thats... sad.
<<if $handhold is "true">>You gently squeeze her hand, <</if>>"Well, thats okay. I don't have many friends either. But we can be friends, right?"
For the first time since you started walking, she looks up at you, you smile at her sincerely. She doesn't smile back, but nods, "Okay."<</if>>

"Okay."
Maybe you should get off the subject now.
